How to be a savvy political donor
By Jane Scholz

In general:
• Your money has the greatest impact closest to home!
• Pick one or a few organizations, research them, support them, stick with them.
• Start small, learn more, add $$ over time.
• Recurring (monthly) donations are more valuable than one-time donations.
• Support organizations that have been around a while and have staying power.
• Make a plan and stick to it! Ignore the fundraising texts and emails unless you know the organization or candidate.
• Political contributions are not tax deductible.
It’s important to support the Democratic Party as well as individual candidates: the party knows who likely Democratic voters are and works hard to turn them out to vote in elections.
Our local Democratic Party registers voters all year long, not just during election season. It looks for good candidates and supports them with literature, volunteer recruitment, phone calls and block walking.
How to keep track of your giving: Set up an Act Blue account at https://secure.actblue.com.
Go to the site and create an account for yourself, then search for candidates or orgs you want to contribute to or when you go through a candidate or organization website, indicate that you have an ActBlue account so your contributions can be recorded there. When you log in, your contribution history is right there for you to see, including a total for all your donations to Dem candidates and orgs.
My preferences — I give monthly contributions to all of the organizations below. During election season, I give directly to a few local (city, county, Texas House and Senate, US House) candidates who impress me and to Democrats at the top of the state ticket who have a shot at winning.
Other than that, I might give a few bucks to one candidate from another state per campaign cycle: I usually look for incumbents with strong track records who are in tight races.
Denton County Democratic Party (DCDP): If you want to see Democrats win seats on the County Commission and send Democrats to the Texas House and Senate, this is the best place to put your money. The DCDP works to recruit candidates, help them fundraise and turn out the vote for them. This costs $$$. They also support national and statewide Democratic candidates.

I give more to the county party than to all the others on this list combined.

Denton Together PAC: This is a local PAC organized to support Denton County Democratic and progressive candidates running in non-partisan elections. They have a strong record of picking winning candidates.
Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee: Also called DCCC or D-Triple C. This is the Democratic House of Representatives national campaign committee.
It is run by members of the House who have a vested interest in getting as many Dem House members in office as possible so that their party members can make the rules and run the committees. The DCCC recruits candidates, raises funds and organizes races in districts expected to yield politically notable or close elections.
House members know who their best fundraisers are and those are the people who run the show. This group has been around since 1866.
Democratic Senate Campaign Committee (DSCC): Very similar to the DCCC, their goal is to elect a maximum number of Democrats to the Senate. Like the DCCC, their first loyalty is to incumbents, but they are motivated to elect as many Dems to the Senate as possible. They’ve been around since 1916. Their specialty is identifying non-incumbents who are likely to win based on the voting profile of each state.
Democratic National Committee (DNC): The DNC is responsible for articulating and promoting the Democratic platform and coordinating party organizational activity. In particular, it organizes national convention held every four years, and is subsequently responsible for the Presidential campaign. The DNC is more focused on campaign and organizational strategy than public policy.

Most important in presidential election years.
